I’ll be attending EURIXE (European Rigger Exchange) at Schwelle 7, so will be in Berlin 22-29 April. This means that I will have some free time during evenings and on the last weekend for giving private lessons. Having had a wide range of teachers, rather than adhere rigidly to any one school, I draw on an amalgamation of these influences to create my own style. My approach is to teach an understanding of the ‘ingredients’ which allows students to explore their own freestyle ‘recipes’, rather than to have their creativity constrained by rigidly defined ties. Understanding the engineering principles permits this and also provides methods of evaluating the integrity and safety of all of ones ties. It is all too easy to merely follow the steps but fail to achieve the technical objective. As I always say, there’s a big difference between something flying like an aeroplane and just looking like one.
Of course, this is all a largely pointless exercise if one does not apply the rope to maximum effect. If you can’t push the right buttons with one rope, just adding more is unlikely to do the trick. This appears to be the least understood area of kinbaku and the one I enjoy teaching the most…especially when I see couples starting to enjoy the benefits 😉
