The schedule can never be cast in stone and might be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances. For example, last year, Zamil’s taxi was unfortunately involved in an accident on the way to the airport preventing his attendance. We might also be throwing in a few surprises, one of which will be Hedwig’s dissertation ‘Sense & Shibari’, which is probably the only properly researched academic on the subject. Like kinbaku, the Festival is organic. However it turns out, you can be sure that this will be the highlight of the shibari calendar once again. As we did in 2011, we will be spreading our top acts across all the days to make sure each is unmissable.
We were aware that previous years attracted a lot of complete beginners, so we have some workshops for them. Of course, there will be plenty for those who have moved beyond the basics and, with the level of talent present, even the most experienced will find a lot to discover. Those familiar with time-honoured Japanese tradition of learning, by ‘stealing knowledge’ through watching the masters at work, should leave with bulging pockets by just keeping their eyes open throughout the festival.
Important note: The gallery has two spaces: the main area downstairs and the mezzanine, which has recently been extensively altered. The main area holds the largest capacity so will be allocated to workshops. The mezzanine has very limited space and we found noise cross-over a problem, so we will only be running one set of workshops at a time. If you are playing or socialising, rather than participating in a class or presentation, please show respect by keeping noise levels down and minimise distrubance.
