Following on from the first class on ‘Communication and handling‘, we have added another free tutorial in the ‘What I wish I had known when I started shibari’ series. This time I talk about the aesthetics of Japanese bondage or, at least, about the styles demonstrated by some of their best known nawashi. For once, I have avoided trying to draw a line but, instead, provided you with some of the best and most iconic examples (in my typically ever so ‘umble opinion). I hope this will allow you to educate your taste-buds towards this interpretation of the word.
I don’t claim to be a style guru but over the years, Nina and I have developed some appreciation and are getting an eye for when it looks right. This was very much lacking at the start of my career and even now we both frequently don’t achieve the desired aesthetic. Often, there are very simple reasons for this which can easily be addressed. This series is the point out some of the mistakes we have made and how we address them so you don’t have to. Like it says on the label: ‘What I wish I had known when I started shibari’ .
