Few of us can have escaped hearing about ‘50 Shades of Grey‘, some of us appear to have actually read it. I confess, I haven’t but I have read ‘I read and review Fifty Shades of Grey so you don’t have to‘. I have to say, I love this review and I think it has done its job. I doubt I shall bother reading the original. On one hand, if the sales of rope are rocketing as a result, I’m happy and so is my bank manager. Of course, anything that makes kink more acceptable and thus reduces discrimination is OK by me too. On the other, it seems to merely reinforce old and misconceived stereo-types that subs are poor helpless souls with no will of their own and dominants all have dark childhood secrets that made them that way. Anyway, BizzyBiz Blog seems right on the money. Here’s a little preview:
The very first note I wrote about this book reads as follows:
“Page 1: First two sentences!!! I immediately dislike this.”
The next note reads:
“Entire first paragraph fucking blows.”
This book opens with the main character, Ana, standing in front of a mirror and complaining because ohmigod her hair just won’t behave! I instantly hate her. She continues to do this through the entire paragraph and also tells us her blue eyes are too big for her face. I already know this is going to be a theme and I HATE women who act like this – the exaggerated self-depreciation compliment fishing behavior of the insecure and self-obsessed. Oh you have big beautiful blue eyes? I FEEL SO FUCKING SORRY FOR YOU.
