6mm, 3-ply twisted, untreated natural jute rope supplied in 15m (50ft) lengths. This is ideal to cut down into two 7.5m lengths (25ft) to give Shibari/Kinbaku lengths and be finished with a single knot at each end. Available individually, or at a saving in basic sets (3 x 15m ropes) and advanced sets (6 x 15m ropes). The rope is also available fully hand-treated in two piece sets comprising two 7m (25ft) lengths.

A lovely honey colour and lighter than European hemp, but slightly heavier than typical Japanese rope. Since each ply is made of many smaller twists, the rope has wonderful definition and leaves beautiful clear marks. It can be used as is, but is best treated for an improved feel (see Rope Care section for instructions). I have swtiched to this rope myself and given it a lot of use over many months. It seems pretty indestructible and feels better every time you use it.

The secret of the ropes durability is the higher number of twists per inch. The picture in the hand-treated Jute section shows my rope at the top of the frame and typical Japanese rope at the bottom. The tighter twist makes it virtually immune to a problem I have encountered with Japanese rope, where it untwists and kinks.

Interestingly, I have recently learnt that 'Japanese hemp' is a misonomer as, apparently, nobody uses hemp rope in Japan. The Japanese language does not differentiate between jute and hemp and it is merely a quirk of on-line dictionaries that first component of Asanawa, Asa has been translated as hemp rather than jute (nawa meaning rope). Tsubaki oil is a natural plant oil, which has been used for centuries in Japan to treat wood and metal, especially Samurai weaponry.

It is very high in oleic acid and is popular for moisturising and conditioning the skin, hair and nails. So, it's nice to know you won't have to wash it off after oiling your ropes.

It is an excellent ethical alternative for those who do not want to use Bayu (Horse Oil). Furthermore, it has a pleasant smell, unlike some oils I have tried.
